Book Summary:

Time for a Heart-to-Heart is not your typical memoir, but is rather eclectic in tone — at times philosophical, poetic, poignant, uplifting, confessional, hysterically funny, and nostalgic. But most of all, it is an inspiring story of the triumph of hope and the human spirit in the face of the direst of circumstances and the ultimate challenge of survival. People who have gone through significant heart disease or have undergone organ transplants – as well as their families and friends – will appreciate this book. About a year ago, Bob Mitchell became very sick. He would endure three near-fatal episodes of ventricular tachycardia due to a heart muscle comprised of 54% scar tissue, as well as heart surgeries, two harrowing months of waiting on the transplant list for a new heart on life supporting IV drips (during which time a malignant tumor was detected in his kidney), partial nephrectomy surgery to remove the cancer, another month of waiting, 12-hour heart and kidney transplant surgery, and 100 days on life support in four different hospitals. A novelist at heart, Bob’s ordeal seemed like a memoir screaming to be written. Not simply a narrative of the physical and emotional experience of what it’s like to go through and recover from a transplant, it is at its core both a thought-provoking, introspective monologue, and an intimate dialogue with the reader, concerning life’s fundamental conflicts that the author pondered during his ordeal. These experiences and tribulations gave clarity and perspective to the things Bob had been thinking, teaching, and writing for over five decades: fear and hope, despair and joy, failure and success, pride and humility, thought and feeling, control and surrender, arbitrariness and justice, constriction and freedom, youth and age, life and death.

Book Summary:

This extensively revised second edition traces the development of the basic concepts in cardiovascular physiology in light of the accumulated experimental and clinical evidence. It considers the early embryonic circulation, where blood circulation suggests the existence of a motive force, tightly coupled to the metabolic demands of the tissues. It proposes that rather than being an organ of propulsion, the heart, serves as an organ of control, generating pressure by rhythmically impeding blood flow. New and expanded chapters cover the arterial pulse, circulation in the upright posture, microcirculation and functional heart morphology. Heart and Circulation offers a new perspective for deeper understanding of the human cardiovascular system. It is therefore a thought-provoking resource for cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and trainees interested in models of human circulation.

Book Summary:

“Time of death...” the doctor said. I won’t forget that moment I looked over at Ellie—the paleness of her once rosy cheeks, the blue hue coating her perfect lips—the woman I had been with since we were five years old. My wife. My best friend...and the mother to our newborn baby girl. You promised me we would be together forever, I wanted to tell her. She gave me her forever, I told myself. Her forever just ended at twenty-five. “You need to say your goodbyes...” the doctor said. How do I say goodbye to the one person in my life I could never say goodbye to? My body is numb, and my heart hurts. Hurts like someone just ripped it out of my chest. Which is ironic... “We are going to remove her heart now, Hunter. It was her wish to donate,” the doctor said. She never told me this. She never told me another woman would carry on with her beating heart. She never told me this woman knew me but wouldn’t let me know her. She never told me if I should follow her heart, or if I should follow mine. She knew. She could have told me...

Book Summary:

God, Man, Mortality is a collection of essays written both by seasoned and by up and coming scholars working the field known as Nursi studies. The aim of these essays is to hold a mirror up to Nursi's teachings on a number of issues, just as Nursi held a mirror up to the teachings of the Qur'an. The scope is broad covering subjects such as Divine immanence and transcendence, human spirituality and man's role as Divine vicegerent. Divine determining and free will, and human conscience as evidence of the existence of God. The topics presented by the authors are unashamedly theocentric in nature: discussions on politics and legal theory are conspicuous by their absence. We benefit from the depth of awareness that the contributors clearly have of Nursi's teachings and his place in the Muslim academe, as well as from their lucid expository styles and strong authorial voices.

This book brings to the fore the crucial importance of real conversation and treating each other well, and points out the close relationship this has to the Golden Rule (do as you would be done by), giving many and amusing examples and quotations on how good things happen when we act in this way. It talks about the various kinds of conversation and the significance of the genuinely friendly, open-ended kind, which has appeared to be in decline. And makes clear that it can give rise to unpredicted good new ideas, while valuing the contributions of all involved in the conversation and boosting everyones sense of well-being. Many ideas are presented on how to bring about this kind of conversational dance, and ways in which one can begin and continue to notice how this comes into life and how we may act on this at every opportunity.

Book Summary:

Straight from the Heart brings together an inspiring collection of Buddhist teachings, songs of realization, meditation instructions, and enlightened poetry—all chosen for their power to speak directly to the student. Drawn from Indian Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism as well as from all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism, some will impress with their beautiful poetry and powerful imagery, others with their profound power of instruction. Still others share personal advice for life that seems to come directly from the mouth of the author, and some serve as immediate and profound practice instructions. Several are just delightfully unconventional, even outrageous, letting in fresh air on petrified views or musty traditions. Most of them are simply unknown precious gems, which deserve a wider audience. Each of the works is preceded by a brief introduction and a short biography of its author. Many of these are legendary accounts of supernatural feats, edifying examples for students on the same spiritual path meant to expand their limited outlook with "mind-blowing" stories. Miraculous deeds, magnificent songs, and pithy instructions distinguish this collection assembled by the Buddhist scholar and translator Karl Brunnhölzl, whose years of work among dharma texts and his skill as a translator yield a rich mine of teachings all chosen for their ability to speak directly to the heart.

Book Summary:

This groundbreaking book weaves together three important themes. It describes major developments in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease in the twentieth century, explains how the Mayo Clinic evolved from a family practice in Minnesota into one of the world's leading medical centers, and reveals how the invention of new technologies and procedures promoted specialization among physicians and surgeons. Caring for the Heart is written for general readers as well as health care professionals, historians, and policy analysts. Unlike traditional institutional or disease-focused histories, this book places individuals and events in national and international contexts that emphasize the interplay of medical, scientific, technological, social, political, and economic forces that have resulted in contemporary heart care. Patient stories and media perspectives are included throughout to help general readers understand the medical and technological developments that are described. The book is a synthetic study, but it is written so that readers may pick and choose the chapters of most interest to them. Another feature of the book is that readers may follow the stories without looking at the notes. Those who are interested in delving deeper into the main topics will find a wealth of carefully chosen references that offer greater detail and additional perspectives. The descriptions and interpretations that fill the book benefit from the fact that the author has been a practicing cardiologist and medical historian for almost four decades. This is mainly a twentieth-century story, but it begins earlier--before there were physicians who were identified as cardiologists and at a time when medical specialization was just emerging in America. The final chapter, which addresses present-day concerns about health care costs, counterbalances earlier ones that might be read as celebrations of new technologies.

This is an edition from my collection of poems written by me over the last few years. I have been inspired by GOD. I have two friends in the music business who have also inspired me. These three are the loves of my life, hence the love poems. But my intention is to convey a spiritual love, not physical. A spiritual love is the highest form of love we can experience. If you know spiritual love then you know how happy it can be. The emotions are more enhanced. Even though some of my poems seem to be in the physical sense that is not what they are about. Music and love is where the poems came from and these two things are what connects us all.the way GOD intended. Life is loveLove is Life.GOD is love.Love is GOD. To be loved by GOD is to love everyone. Please enjoy and share these poems with others. I hope and pray for love to be in the life of all. Thank you all for supporting those in need and sharing the love. Most of the poems contained in the book are solely dedicated to Elvis Presley...the king of rockn roll. I have been a fan since 1962 and will forever love him as a person, singer, actor and the greatest entertainer of all time!

Book Summary:

This monograph had its genesis in a workshop on the specific conduction held in the spring of 1975. The meeting was organized to discuss present knowledge on structure and function of the cardiac specialized tissues with emphasis on their clinical implications. Since much new information was presented, the participants agreed to prepare manuscripts and make their material available for publication. This has resulted in a book in which the cardiac specialized tissues are discussed by different specialists: the electron-microscopist, anatomist, pathologist, physiologist, physicist and clinician. Apart from their interest in the cardiac conduction system the participants shared the opinion that their contribu tion should be relevant to the understanding and treatment of patients with cardiac arrhythmias. The book should be useful for the clinician, the morphologist and the physio logist. The workshop took place at the University Department of Cardiology, Wilhelmina Gasthuis, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. This is the home ground of one of the most outstanding electro cardiologists of our time, Dr. Dirk Durrer. By pairing genius and originality with endless fund of energy and dogged persistence he made several important contributions to modern cardiac electrophysiology. In recent years he created a cardio logical institute where workers from various disciplines cooperate in the study and treat ment of cardiac disease. Several of his pupils participated in the workshop and contributed to this volume. In appreciation and thankfulness we want to dedicate this book to Dr. Dirk Durrer.

As with any person with a free spirit who wishes to experience as many aspects of life as possible, I have at times gone astray—off the beaten path—or a Frost would say “The Road Not Taken- and that has made all the difference”. But this the price one must pay. I have been writing poetry since I was a little girl. I am a member of the Famous Poet’s Society. In this capacity I have won the Famous Poet’s Award for the years 2002 and 2003. 1 addition I have also won the Shakespearean Trophy Award for Excellence for the year 2003. Now I am embarking on a new path. This is my first book of poems. It is a compilation of all the experiences that I have encountered since I was a little girl until the present. The book content consist of such topics as religion, nature, animals, political, personal emotions and famous people amongst other things. All in all, from my poetry, I’d like everyone to know the “REAL ME”. So I close with “Paperback Writer” Dear Sir or Madam Will you read my book? It took me years to write Will you take a look? In essence, I would love for each of you who reads the jacket to consider buying my book. Sincerely; Doreen Kovach

Book Summary:

We often hear that success requires pushing the boundaries, coloring outside the lines, stepping on toes, and breaking all the rules. But some rules are so critical they aren't meant to be broken. Here, perennially popular Good Morning America host Robin Roberts reveals the 8 rules that she has always honored on her road to success. Illustrated with stories from her work, her family, and her faith, she explains how deceptively simple maxims like "Never lose sight of the Big Picture" and "Give people the benefit of the doubt" are both deeply meaningful and crucial to happiness and genuine accomplishment. Combined with a good dose of Robin's trademark humor, warmth, and honesty, this book will be required reading for anyone in need of an infusion of sincere inspiration. And in light of her announcement in July 2007 that she had breast cancer, Robin's message is bound to touch an even larger audience.

Book Summary:

In The Heart of ACT, renowned acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) trainer Robyn Walser explores ACT as a process-based therapy incorporating interpersonal, intrapersonal, and overarching and ongoing processes, as well as the integration of six core components of psychological flexibility to connect clinicians to the dynamic and relational implementation of ACT. Engaging clinical scenarios, therapeutic insights, and supervision dialogues are offered to help clinicians move beyond their conceptual understanding of ACT principles to master the nuances of the therapeutic relationship at the heart of ACT. Using the tips and strategies in this professional guide, you’ll develop a flexible, grounded, and client-centered practice. With this comprehensive resource, you’ll learn to cultivate an organic, process-driven practice, grounded in the heart of the therapeutic relationship and responsive to clients in the moment. The Heart of ACT is designed to mimic the supervision experience by presenting material in thought-provoking chapters grounded in real-life clinical situations and challenges. In the book, you’ll also find supervision dialogues inspired by Walser's work with her supervisees, Carlton Coulter and Manuela O’Connell. Carlton and Manuela comment and ask questions related to the material in the book and their own ACT learning process. These are then addressed by Walser in a dialogue designed to assist clinicians in connecting to the material. These sections mimic the helpful mentoring process of one-on-one training and supervision, and offer insights into specific therapeutic challenges that can unfold in structured conversation. As the applications of ACT grow, so does the need for up-to-date professional resources. Unlike many advanced ACT books that focus on procedures and techniques, The Heart of ACT focuses on the heart of the therapeutic relationship, as well as the “soft skills” that are difficult to describe, but which often mark the difference between a merely good clinician and an excellent one. If you’re looking to take your ACT delivery to a new, exciting level, this book is a must-have addition to your professional library.
