When the Mayflower embarked on her famous voyage to America in 1620, she was carrying 102 passengers. To most, they are simply known as the Pilgrims. Perhaps the name of Governor William Bradford, Elder William Brewster, or Captain Myles Standish are vaguely familiar; but the vast majority of the Mayflower passengers have remained anonymous and nameless. In The Mayflower and Her Passengers, I have attempted to resurrect the unique individuality of each passenger by providing short biographies for each person or family group. Also included is a groundbreaking new biography of the Mayflower ship itself.

Book Summary:

The little band of Puritan emigres that left Southampton in 1620 to found a godly colony in America had no inkling that they were the forerunners of the greatest feat of nation-building in the early modern world. In this book Christopher Hilton recreates the lives and aspirations of the Pilgrims, from before their famous voyage on the Mayflower to the far-reaching and astonishing implications of their emigration. The Mayflower pilgrims were unique in their reasons for leaving their homeland. Unlike the majority of emigrants they were not seeking material benefits. They had fled England for liberal Holland but, after a decade there, feared assimilation so they decided to journey across the Atlantic and try to survive the uncertainties of a new and distant land. Their driving force was freedom to worship God in the way their conscience told them was right. Yet their journey was not easy. They fled from persecution only for half of their band to die during the first winter in America. Disease and a degenerating relationship with the Wampanoag Indians later forced the rest of the colony to amalgamate with a less radical group in Boston. While the Pilgrims' dream may not have been realised as they had hoped, their self-determination would inspire generations of aspirant migrants the world over. Their legacy played an important part in precipitating the imperial conflict with Britain after 1763 and would later stand at the core of the American ideal during the centuries following independence. Even the US Constitutions was, arguably, based upon the Puritans' own laws.Using contemporary documents, Christopher Hilton explores the personalities as well as the philosophy of these extraordinary men and women. Mayflower: The Voyage that Changed the World is the first time the complete story of the Pilgrims has been told for many years and it will appeal to anyone with an interest in this epic Anglo-American story.

Book Summary:

Leading into the 400th anniversary of the voyage of the Mayflower, Martyn Whittock examines the lives of the “saints” (members of the Separatist puritan congregations) and “strangers” (economic migrants) on the original ship who collectively became known to history as “the Pilgrims.”The story of the Pilgrims has taken on a life of its own as one of our founding national myths—their escape from religious persecution, the dangerous transatlantic journey, that brutal first winter. Throughout the narrative, we meet characters already familiar to us through Thanksgiving folklore—Captain Jones, Myles Standish, and Tisquantum (Squanto)—as well as new ones. There is Mary Chilton, the first woman to set foot on shore, and asylum seeker William Bradford. We meet fur trapper John Howland and little Mary More, who was brought as an indentured servant. Then there is Stephen Hopkins, who had already survived one shipwreck and was the only Mayflower passenger with any prior Amer- ican experience. Decidedly un-puritanical, he kept a tavern and was frequently chastised for allowing drinking on Sundays.Epic and intimate, Mayflower Lives is a rich and rewarding book that promises to enthrall readers of early American history.

Book Summary:

Deep inside the common house, William Bradford coughed and wheezed. His face was as gray as the smoke from the fire. His right hand tried to roll a large barrel of gunpowder toward the door while his left hand pressed against the wall for support. Pieces of smoldering straw fell down from the roof, landing on him and the barrel. Thou art too sick to move that barrel. Let us help thee. Before, during, and after the 1620 voyage on the Mayflower, the Pilgrims experienced a common house fire, other challenges, and many accomplishments. Their journey is explored by Rose Hopkins when she travels backward in time and meets her ancestors through Mayflower Dreams. Within her reality and dreams, Rose finds that her modern life connects to Pilgrim history and culture. In her reality, Rose has problems living in the present. She is often late and is separated from her husband. She connects to her ancestors as she uses a sampler to look for a watch. Her journey includes visiting Pilgrim Hall Museum, Plymouth Rock, Plimoth Plantation, and the Mayflower II. In her dreams, Rose uses lucid dreaming techniques to create a dream story. She meets many Pilgrims, including John Robinson, the pastor of the Puritans. The Pilgrim history, lifestyle, dialogue, and dreams of religious freedom are realistically displayed within Roses dream story.

The Mayflower Park Hotel started life as the Bergonian Hotel on July 16, 1927. One of Seattles first uptown hotels, it was designed by architect B. Dudley Stuart and built by Stephen Berg at a cost of $750,000. In the midst of the Great Depression, the hotel was sold and renamed Hotel Mayflower. In 1948, Washington State legalized cocktail lounges, and the Hotel Mayflower became Seattles first hotel to open one. In the ensuing decades, Seattle prospered, and it hosted the 1962 Worlds Fair with its symbolic Space Needle. By the 1970s, Seattle was in a deep recession, and the hotel had become sadly neglected. In 1974, Birney and Marie Dempcy formed a limited partnership to purchase the hotel and renamed it the Mayflower Park Hotel. Restoration started immediately, and after 40 years, the Dempcys remain dedicated to the tradition of making the Mayflower Park Hotel Quite Simply, One of a Kind.

Book Summary:

David Lindsay, researching old records to learn details of the life of his ancestor, Richard More, soon found himself in the position of the Sorcerer's Apprentice-wherever he looked for one item, ten more appeared. What he found illuminated not only More's own life but painted a clear and satisfying picture of the way the First Comers, Saints and Strangers alike, set off for the new land, suffered the voyage on the Mayflower, and put down their roots to thrive on our continent's northeastern shore. From the story, Richard emerges as a man of questionable morals, much enterprise, and a good deal of old-fashioned pluck, a combination that could get him into trouble-and often did. He lived to father several children, to see, near the end of his life, a friend executed as a witch in Salem, and to be read out of the church for unseemly behavior. Mayflower Bastard lets readers see history in a new light by turning an important episode into a personal experience.

Book Summary:

This book grew out of a series of articles which were published originally in Ebony magazine. The book, like the series, deals with the trials and triumphs of a group of Americans whose roots in the American soil are deeper than those of the Puritans who arrived on the celebrated “Mayflower” a year after a “Dutch man of war” deposited twenty Negroes at Jamestown. This is a history of “the other Americans” and how they came to North America and what happened to them when they got here. The story begins in Africa with the great empires of the Sudan and Nile Valley and ends with the Second Reconstruction which Martin Luther King, Jr., and the “sit-in” generation are fashioning in the North and South. The story deals with the rise and growth of slavery and segregation and the continuing efforts of Negro Americans to answer the question of the Jewish poet of captivity: “How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?” This history is founded on the work of scholars and specialists and is designed for the average reader. It is not, strictly speaking, a book for scholars; but it is as scholarly as fourteen months of research could make it. Readers who would like to follow the story in greater detail are urged to read each chapter in connection with the outline of Negro history in the appendix.
