Book Summary:

Sexy, sassy Miami private eye Lupe Solano returns in a “meticulously constructed mystery” (Boulder Planet) in which she must deal with a puzzling case and a personal tragedy that are dangerously intertwined. Lupe is about to do something completely out of character—put aside her work and worries for the first time in forever and take a vacation to the Florida Keys. But just as she’s packing her bags, defense attorney (and occasional bedmate) Tommy McDonald calls her up with a job. Tommy’s client is Alonso Arango, a jewelry store owner who shot a man in self-defense. Since no knife was found and no one actually witnessed the incident, he’s being charged with murder. And after interviewing Arango, both Lupe and Tommy know he’s lying. But why? Complicating things further is Lupe’s longtime friend, Margarita. After mentioning having information pertaining to the case, she perishes in a mysterious car accident before she can reveal all. As Lupe copes with her grief, she digs deeper into the mystery—and soon finds herself on the run from a killer plot to turn her planned vacation into a permanent retirement. Praise for Carolina Garcia-Aguilera “A free-spirited heroine, some wry humor, and an insider’s look at an unfamiliar milieu are pluses here.” —Kirkus “[Garcia-Aguilera] weaves in the nuances of the Hispanic community with finesse. Lupe often uses her understanding of her heritage into her work.” —Ft. Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel

Book Summary:

A revised, enlarged, and updated edition of this authoritative and entertaining reference book —named the #2 essential home library reference book by the Wall Street Journal “Shapiro does original research, earning [this] volume a place on the quotation shelf next to Bartlett's and Oxford's.”—William Safire, New York Times Magazine (on the original edition) “A quotations book with footnotes that are as fascinating to read as the quotes themselves.”—Arthur Spiegelman, Washington Post Book World (on the original edition) Updated to include more than a thousand new quotations, this reader-friendly volume contains over twelve thousand famous quotations, arranged alphabetically by author and sourced from literature, history, popular culture, sports, digital culture, science, politics, law, the social sciences, and all other aspects of human activity. Contemporaries added to this edition include Beyoncé, Sandra Cisneros, James Comey, Drake, Louise Glück, LeBron James, Brett Kavanaugh, Lady Gaga, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Barack Obama, John Oliver, Nancy Pelosi, Vladimir Putin, Bernie Sanders, Donald Trump, and David Foster Wallace. The volume also reflects path-breaking recent research resulting in the updating of quotations from the first edition with more accurate wording or attribution. It has also incorporated noncontemporary quotations that have become relevant to the present day. In addition, The New Yale Book of Quotations reveals the striking fact that women originated many familiar quotations, yet their roles have been forgotten and their verbal inventions have often been credited to prominent men instead. This book’s quotations, annotations, extensive cross-references, and large keyword index will satisfy both the reader who seeks specific information and the curious browser who appreciates an amble through entertaining pages.

Book Summary:

When the world is bursting with prospective life-partners, how can two young people, thousands of miles apart on different continents, possibly be the only ones who are right for each other? Well, sometimes… they just can. “While not normally a book I would choose, I couldn’t put it down. Didn’t sleep much. Kept reading. Couldn’t stop.” - Leslie O’Brien, CEO Goldenwest Editing, California Charles Swinter is eighty, fabulously wealthy and, since the sudden death of his estranged wife, Vivienne, seemingly on top of the world. It’s time to go abroad in search of true love. Anticipating the disapproval of his friends, he covers his tracks in England before departing. It’s none of their business, after all, and no one knows what’s good for him like he does. He quickly locates what he considers the ideal woman. Nongnuch Kitkailart: beautiful, intelligent, desperately poor, pragmatic enough to be highly biddable, and fifty years his junior. Unfortunately, back in England, people become concerned at his prolonged absence. The police are duly informed, but one particularly close friend, Edward Grant, decides to track him down in person. Edward is everything Charles is not. Young, good-looking, morally perceptive, loyal, capable of deep and genuine attachment to another human being. And suddenly – predictably - both are in love with the same woman. Yet what happens next isn’t so straightforward. No one’s reckoned with the demands of conscience. Nor with murder, mental disturbances, reports of ghosts, a sham marriage, wrongful imprisonment, and an entire further universe of heavy obstacles. Not the least of which is that Edward’s older brother, George, and Charles’s granddaughter, Susan, are also mutually smitten, and in a tangle of ways no one on Earth can apparently unpick – including them. Nevertheless, where there is love, a happy conclusion can never entirely be ruled out. The House of Charles Swinter is an epic romance. It concerns human dignity, the relationship between the sexes, goodness and beauty, poverty and wealth, globalisation, tradition and modernity. And one man and woman.

Book Summary:

In this romantic suspense novel from the author of Pitch Black,a troubled woman finds love—and a monster from her past will soon find her. Ellis Greene remembers very little about the night of her cousin Laura’s murder, but she does recall the face of her murderer. Ellis was the key witness to the crime, and her testimony helped put Hollis Alexander in jail for a long time. With Hollis behind bars, Ellis should feel safe, but the memory of that awful night still haunts her. Determined to free herself from the fear of being attacked like her cousin, Ellis has become an expert in self-defense. However, when Ellis hears that Alexander has been paroled, she feels like a helpless teenager again—and she isn’t the only one who notices that he’s free. Laura’s boyfriend Nate was one of the prime suspects for her murder. After the court case, many still believed that Nate was guilty, and he left town to reinvent himself. Now, fifteen years later, he has returned to protect Ellis from suffering the same fate as her cousin. As soon as Ellis and Nate see one another, sparks fly. But Ellis hasn’t let herself fall for a man in a long time, and she isn’t sure whether she can trust Nate. As Laura’s killer zeroes in on Ellis as his next target, she must fight to stay alive while she finally discovers her true feelings about Nate. “A tight and suspenseful story that will have readers guessing until the last chapter. Poignant in places and nail-bitingly tense in others.” —Romantic Times Magazine

Book Summary:

The work of the poet Peter Redgrove is one of the great unexplored treasures of late twentieth century literature. His prolific output presents an intriguing variety of personae: magician, scientist, lover, psychologist, joker, madman. It is only now, with the publication of his Collected Poems and this biography, that we can see how and why these personae developed - and discover the full depth and range of this visionary writer. Born into an apparently conventional middle-class family that was in reality deeply disturbed, the poet finally emerged: transforming himself from the neurotic, Oedipal young scientist, through a process of mental breakdown, insulin coma therapy, erotic revelation and the discovery of poetic companionship at Cambridge - and particularly his friendship and rivalry with Ted Hughes. Neil Roberts explores the inner story of this emergence, and Redgrove's later development through marriage, family life, the fellowship of the 'Group', alcoholic excess, infidelity and marital breakdown to his triumphant later partnership with Penelope Shuttle. We also discover, for the first time, some darker secrets: his fascination with Aleister Crowley, his damaged and damaging relationship with his father, and the lifelong sexual fetish which he called the 'Game'. Drawing on the poet's intimate journals and correspondence, and interviews with family, friends and colleagues, A Lucid Dreamer tells the exceptionally inward and revealing story of an astonishing creative life.

Book Summary:

The White Company is a historical adventure by Arthur Conan Doyle set during the Hundred Years' War. The story is set in England, France, and Spain, in the years 1366 and 1367, against the background of the campaign of Edward, the Black Prince to restore Peter of Castile to the throne of the Kingdom of Castile. The climax of the book occurs before the Battle of Nájera. Doyle became inspired to write the novel after attending a lecture on the Middle Ages in 1889. After extensive research, The White Company was published in serialized form in 1891 in Cornhill Magazine. Additionally, the book is considered a companion to Doyle's later work Sir Nigel, which explores the early campaigns of Sir Nigel Loring and Samkin Aylward. The novel is relatively unknown today, though it was very popular up through the Second World War. In fact, Doyle himself regarded this and his other historical novels more highly than the Sherlock Holmes adventures for which he is mainly remembered. The "White Company" of the title is a free company of archers, led by one of the main characters. The name is taken from a real-life 14th-Century Italian mercenary company, led by John Hawkwood.

Book Summary:

The Devil's Diary is Patrick McGinley's greatest tribute to his master Flann O'Brien, in this dark humoured portrayal of a harrowing Irish landscape in which lunacy reigns. Idealistic love and death, sibling rivalry and obsessive lust are themes familiar to McGinley's work, focusing here on Arty Brennan, who built factories, a supermarket and a noisy motel, trading a spiritually enriching culture for a "hippiedrome" of second-rate 20th century glitter.

Book Summary:

Joseph and His Friend: A Story of Pennsylvania (1870) is a novel by Bayard Taylor. Written toward the end of Taylor’s career as a prominent travel writer and poet, Joseph and His Friend: A Story of Pennsylvania has been recognized by scholars as the first gay novel in American literary history. “When they were seated side by side, and Joseph leaned his head back on the supporting arm, while the train moved away with them, he felt that a new power, a new support, had come to his life. The face upon which he looked was no longer strange; the hand which had rested on his heart was warm with kindred blood. Involuntarily he extended his own; it was taken and held, and the dark gray, courageous eyes turned to him with a silent assurance which he felt needed no words.” During a train derailment, Joseph Aster sustains minor injuries and his helped by a kind stranger named Philip Held. Regaining his senses, Joseph feels an unspeakably strong spiritual and physical connection with his savior. As they become inseparable friends, Joseph’s home life begins to suffer as his wife Julia asserts control over their finances, often to the benefit of her wealthy family. When tragedy strikes, Joseph has no one to turn to but Philip, a man he has grown to love more than anything in the world. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Bayard Taylor’s Joseph and His Friend: A Story of Pennsylvania is a classic work of queer literature reimagined for modern readers.
