Book Summary:

Each time Neil Avery reminisces about a certain Southern preacher, he is haunted with regret for mistreating the minister's daughter—the young woman who tried to teach him about love. This overcomes Avery with thoughts of what should have been. But at the zenith of the 21st century, quantum physicists have created a frightening invention: a time machine responsible for the death of one scientist and disappearance of another. When Avery learns he may be forced into retirement, he must end the military career he loves, or accept a secret mission as part of the nuclear-genetic time machine. But to take on the perilous assignment would mean to join those misleading the FBI away from the most incredible invention devised by man to date. A thrilling novel of technological advances and military might, ACROSS THE SANDS OF TIME is the gripping story of one man's shot at redemption.

Book Summary:

One of ten children, born in 1924 in a little Dutch town close to the German border, Hank OpdenDries grew up in a world surrounded by farms and wooded hills, a life much in contrast to the fast-paced world we understand, where the simple appearance of a car would be met with fascination by an entire village; the most common mode of transport at that time being the horse. As the hungry thirties set in, rumors of war precipitated by Hitler’s Germany threatened to turn Hank’s world upside down. When the invasion came, his world was transformed forever. Witnessing firsthand the German invasion of his homeland, Hank soon found himself, along with many other able-bodied Dutchmen, forced to work in the Ruhr to help the German war effort. Escaping back to the Netherlands, Hank went underground with a number of his friends, remaining in occupied Holland for the duration of the war. Helping to shelter a down British airman (who eventually escaped using the Dutch rail network while still dressed in his RAF uniform), Hank also saw Hitler’s infamous V-2 rockets take flight, along with the Nazi’s sadistic treatment of Holland’s Jewish population. Liberated from German occupation by Canadian soldiers in 1945, three years later, Hank found himself starting a new life as an immigrant to Canada. Vividly retold, Hank’s story is one of survival and resistance in a time of unprecedented violence and treachery. His story is about not only tragedy but also heroism. In short, it is the story of Holland in the Second World War and one man’s determination to build a new life for himself in the country that gave him his freedom.

Book Summary:

Morgan Sherburn is a cop from Los Angeles who, while cleaning out her family's English manor house after the death of her great-grandfather, stumbles across her great-grandmother's journal from her trip to Egypt back in the 1920's. Morgan has been told that her great-grandmother died in Egypt of a fever but she comes to discover in the pages of the journal that her great-grandmother may have been murdered because of a mysterious papyrus, called the "Lady of Heaven" papyrus, that is still in the family's possession. Enlisting the help of Dr. Fox Henredon, a prestigious British Egyptologist, to assist in deciphering the papyrus seems like a mistake at first. Dr. Henredon is handsome, brilliant and skeptical, and when he and Morgan come together, the sparks fly. But when the dust settles and a strong attraction develops, Morgan is determined to go to Egypt to track the clues of the "Lady of Heaven" papyrus, which Fox has discovered to be an ancient document alluding to the tomb of the goddess Isis. As Fox and Morgan dig deeper and deeper into the clues of the mysterious papyrus, old legends become truth, friends turn out to be enemies, and in the middle of it, Morgan discovers the truth about her great-grandmother that she could have never imagined. Along with the truth about her great-grandmother come discoveries and danger on a catastrophic scale. Clever twists and ancient mysteries abound in this deeply romantic novel set in the timeless sands of Egypt where ancient legends and modern realities collide.

Book Summary:

A profound and profoundly important book—a moving personal detective story, an uncovering of secret pasts, and a book that explores the creation and development of world-changing legal concepts that came about as a result of the unprecedented atrocities of Hitler’s Third Reich. East West Street looks at the personal and intellectual evolution of the two men who simultaneously originated the ideas of “genocide” and “crimes against humanity,” both of whom, not knowing the other, studied at the same university with the same professors, in a city little known today that was a major cultural center of Europe, “the little Paris of Ukraine,” a city variously called Lemberg, Lwów, Lvov, or Lviv. It is also a spellbinding family memoir, as the author traces the mysterious story of his grandfather, as he maneuvered through Europe in the face of Nazi atrocities. East West Street is a book that changes the way we look at the world, at our understanding of history and how civilization has tried to cope with mass murder.

Book Summary:

"Hypnotic, shocking, and unputdownable." --John le Carré From the author of the internationally acclaimed, award-winning East West Street: A tale of Nazi lives, mass murder, love, cold war espionage, a mysterious death in the Vatican--and "the Ratline," the Nazi escape route to Peron's Argentina. Baron Otto von Wächter, Austrian lawyer, husband, father, high Nazi official, senior SS officer, former governor of Galicia during the war, creator and overseer of the Krakow ghetto, indicted after as a war criminal for the mass murder of more than 100,000 Poles, hunted by the Soviets, the Americans, the British, by Simon Wiesenthal, on the run for three years, from 1945 to 1948 . . . Philippe Sands pieces together, in riveting detail, Wächter's extraordinary, shocking story. Given full access to the Wächter family archives--journals, diaries, tapes, and more--and with the assistance of the Wächters' son Horst, who believes his father to have been a "good man," Sands writes of Wächter's rise through the Nazi high command, his "blissful" marriage and family life as their world was brought to ruin, and his four-year flight to escape justice--to the Tirol, to Rome, and the Vatican; given a new identity, on his way to a new life via "the Ratline" to Perón's Argentina, the escape route taken by Eichmann, Mengele, and thousands of other Nazis. Wächter's escape was cut short by his mysterious, shocking death in Rome, in the midst of the burgeoning Cold War (was he being recruited in postwar Italy by the Americans and the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps or by the Soviet NKVD or by both; or was he poisoned by one side or the other, as his son believes--or by both?) . . . An extraordinary discovery, told up-close through access to a trove of family correspondence between Wächter and his wife--part historical detective story, part love story, part family memoir, part Cold War espionage thriller. "Breathtaking, gripping, shattering." --Elif Shafak

Named an Indie Next Pick, Library Reads Pick, Apple Books' Best Book, Powells’s Pick, Amazon Fiction & Literature's “Best of the Month," and one of Oprah Daily's Best Historical Novels of 2021 "Funny, eerie, tender, haunting and unsettling, smokily atmospheric, and fantastically enjoyable." —Helen MacDonald, author of Vesper Flights London, 1893: high up in a house on a dark, snowy night, a lone seamstress stands by a window. So begins the swirling, serpentine world of Paraic O’Donnell’s Victorian-inspired mystery, the story of a city cloaked in shadow, but burning with questions: why does the seamstress jump from the window? Why is a cryptic message stitched into her skin? And how is she connected to a rash of missing girls, all of whom seem to have disappeared under similar circumstances? On the case is Inspector Cutter, a detective as sharp and committed to his work as he is wryly hilarious. Gideon Bliss, a Cambridge dropout in love with one of the missing girls, stumbles into a role as Cutter’s sidekick. And clever young journalist Octavia Hillingdon sees the case as a chance to tell a story that matters—despite her employer’s preference that she stick to a women’s society column. As Inspector Cutter peels back the mystery layer by layer, he leads them all, at last, to the secrets that lie hidden at the house on Vesper Sands. By turns smart, surprising, and impossible to put down, The House on Vesper Sands offers a glimpse into the strange undertow of late nineteenth-century London and the secrets we all hold inside us.

Book Summary:

The foods we eat have a deep and often surprising past. From almonds and apples to tea and rice, many foods that we consume today have histories that can be traced out of prehistoric Central Asia along the tracks of the Silk Road to kitchens in Europe, America, China, and elsewhere in East Asia. The exchange of goods, ideas, cultural practices, and genes along these ancient routes extends back five thousand years, and organized trade along the Silk Road dates to at least Han Dynasty China in the second century BC. Balancing a broad array of archaeological, botanical, and historical evidence, Fruit from the Sands presents the fascinating story of the origins and spread of agriculture across Inner Asia and into Europe and East Asia. Through the preserved remains of plants found in archaeological sites, Robert N. Spengler III identifies the regions where our most familiar crops were domesticated and follows their routes as people carried them around the world. With vivid examples, Fruit from the Sands explores how the foods we eat have shaped the course of human history and transformed cuisines all over the globe.

Book Summary:

A powerful, lyrical novel of the endurance of love, set amid the upheaval of the Arab Spring and the brutal repression of a totalitarian regime Tarek, a young father, watches as the city he lives in is mired in protests, hemmed in by barricades and strangely inundated by great flocks of birds. Facing the threat of police arrest, he flees with his nine-year-old daughter, Neda. He is forced to leave behind his pregnant wife, Mona, under the watchful eye of Omar, her deeply troubled and religious brother. Compounding the difficulties of these times, babies refuse to be born and mothers stop giving birth. As Tarek and Nada journey through villages razed by conflict toward a mountain refuge, they meet with travellers from Tarek’s past and his time as a political prisoner. The reunion reveals secrets that Tarek must come to terms with for his own and Neda’s sake. Ultimately, he must decide where this journey will take them and if he will ever be able to return home again. In the tradition of Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children and Orhan Pamuk’s Snow, debut novelist Karim Alrawi deftly weaves an atmospheric, multi-layered story of intimate lives, informed by recent events and heightened by touches of magic realism, set against the wider canvas of historic events.

Book Summary:

From renowned hunting writer Peter Hathaway Capstick comes the most lavishly illustrated, historically important safari ever captured in print. Capstick journeyed on safari through Namibia in the African spring of 1989. This was a nation on the eve on independence, a land scorched by sun, by years of bitter war. In these perilous circumstances, he commences what is surely the most thrilling safari of his storied career. He takes the reader to the stark landscape that makes up the Bushmen’s tribal territories. There, facing all kinds of risks, members of the chase pursue their quarry in a land of legend and myth. In this first person adventure, Capstick spins riveting tales from his travels and reports on the Bushmen’s culture, their political persecution, and the Stone Age life of Africa’s original hunter-gatherers. In addition, the author explains the economic benefits of the sportsman’s presence, and how ethical hunting is a tool for game protection and management on the continent. Featuring one hundred striking color images from leading African wildlife photographer Dr. M. Philip Kahl, Sands of Silence: On Safari in Namibia superbly illustrates Capstick’s return to the veld and perfectly captures life and death in the “land of thirst.”

Book Summary:

An investigation of the embodied engagement between the playing body and the videogame: how player and game incorporate each other. Our bodies engage with videogames in complex and fascinating ways. Through an entanglement of eyes-on-screens, ears-at-speakers, and muscles-against-interfaces, we experience games with our senses. But, as Brendan Keogh argues in A Play of Bodies, this corporal engagement goes both ways; as we touch the videogame, it touches back, augmenting the very senses with which we perceive. Keogh investigates this merging of actual and virtual bodies and worlds, asking how our embodied sense of perception constitutes, and becomes constituted by, the phenomenon of videogame play. In short, how do we perceive videogames? Keogh works toward formulating a phenomenology of videogame experience, focusing on what happens in the embodied engagement between the playing body and the videogame, and anchoring his analysis in an eclectic series of games that range from mainstream to niche titles. Considering smartphone videogames, he proposes a notion of co-attentiveness to understand how players can feel present in a virtual world without forgetting that they are touching a screen in the actual world. He discusses the somatic basis of videogame play, whether games involve vigorous physical movement or quietly sitting on a couch with a controller; the sometimes overlooked visual and audible pleasures of videogame experience; and modes of temporality represented by character death, failure, and repetition. Finally, he considers two metaphorical characters: the “hacker,” representing the hegemonic, masculine gamers concerned with control and configuration; and the “cyborg,” less concerned with control than with embodiment and incorporation.

Thank you for taking a few moments of your time to look at my guide. Take its hand and come along one scene of life at a time, one past picture at a time, and one full indelible life lasting tattoo, like a branded number for a name. All we were left with as a peoples, a family, a race, a culture or even as a name you can help trace back that missing link, that cast away tribe, a blood or even a DNA connection. Yes, you could help us, and we All would be eternally grateful in our appreciation to YOU... So you see, but do you understand, just how difficult a task, or such a search, is to us as we try to find our past? Think of losing all your identity for over 400 years and finally finding a word, a file, or a disc which shows a connection to your past... Would you walk by and ignore it or step into the fray as you searched for that scene where-from you perhaps DID come......? So thank you for stopping to show a little interest.....~dnc

Book Summary:

Adara is a woman who rejects the idea of suppressing her opinions and reflections; she has not read so many books to remain quiet. She also does not hold back in expressing the first thing that crosses her mind, especially the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Azhat, Sheikh Bashah al-Muhabitti, who appears attracted by the sensual chemistry that is forged between them as they grow up. When she turns eighteen years of age, the man that she had considered her friend, betrays and humiliates her publicly. Adara abandons the country and takes along her broken heart, but also the desire to remake her life in liberty and to forget the sensual dark-eyed prince, forever. Intelligent and with a firm character, the attractive prince Bashah is not only preceded by his fame as a coveted bachelor, but also for that of a future king with a progressive vision. Even though seven years have passed, he cannot forget the only person who, in honor of his country, he betrayed. During a cultural exposition in London, he once again finds himself with the unforgettable blue eyes of Adara Rizik. The attraction that had remained trapped in the confines of the past once again is brought back to life as a flare that appears to consume every atom that impulses them to keep away from each other, until the day in which Bashah discovers a secret that not only makes him furious but also increases his determination to once again have his old love between his arms. Special note: Each book of the series could be read as a stand-alone novel. No cliffhanger. This first book is a second chance romance. Enjoy the journey!
