Book Summary:

BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Mary Balogh's The Secret Mistress. New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh returns to the elegance and sensuality of Regency England as she continues the enthralling story of four remarkable women–friends and teachers at Miss Martin’s School for Girls. At the center of this spellbinding novel is Anne Jewell, a teacher haunted by a scandalous past…until she meets a man who teaches her the most important lesson of all: nothing is simple when it comes to love.… She spies him in the deepening dusk of a Wales evening–a lone figure of breathtaking strength and masculinity, his handsome face branded by a secret pain. For single mother and teacher Anne Jewell, newly arrived with her son at a sprawling estate in Wales on the invitation of an influential friend, Sydnam Butler is a man whose sorrows–and passions–run deeper than she could have ever imagined. As steward of a remote seaside manor, Sydnam lives a reclusive existence far from the pity and disdain of others. Yet almost from the moment Anne first appears on the cliffs, he senses in this lovely stranger a kindred soul, and between these two wary hearts, desire stirs. Unable to resist the passion that has rescued them both from loneliness, Anne and Sydnam share an afternoon of exquisite lovemaking. Now the unwed single mother and war-scarred veteran must make a decision that could forever alter their lives. For Sydnam, it is a chance to heal the pain of the past. For Anne, it is the glorious promise of a future with the man who will dare her to reveal her deepest secrets…before she can give him all her heart.

Love's Knowledge

  • Category : Philosophy

  • File Pdf: love-s-knowledge.pdf

Book Summary:

This volume brings together Nussbaum's published papers on the relationship between literature and philosophy, especially moral philosophy. The papers, many of them previously inaccessible to non-specialist readers, deal with such fundamental issues as the relationship between style and content in the exploration of ethical issues; the nature of ethical attention and ethical knowledge and their relationship to written forms and styles; and the role of the emotions in deliberation and self-knowledge. Nussbaum investigates and defends a conception of ethical understanding which involves emotional as well as intellectual activity, and which gives a certain type of priority to the perception of particular people and situations rather than to abstract rules. She argues that this ethical conception cannot be completely and appropriately stated without turning to forms of writing usually considered literary rather than philosophical. It is consequently necessary to broaden our conception of moral philosophy in order to include these forms. Featuring two new essays and revised versions of several previously published essays, this collection attempts to articulate the relationship, within such a broader ethical inquiry, between literary and more abstractly theoretical elements.

It is through this "refining by trials" that the author experiences the intimate presence of God, a presence in our soul that frees us to reconnect to who we truly are as God originally created us to be. Desiring the Good

  • Pages : 288
  • Category : Philosophy

  • File Pdf: desiring-the-good.pdf

Book Summary:

Desiring the Good defends a novel and distinctive approach in ethics that is inspired by ancient philosophy. Ethics, according to this approach, starts from one question and its most immediate answer: "what is the good for human beings?"--"a well-going human life." Ethics thus conceived is broader than moral philosophy. It includes a range of topics in psychology and metaphysics. Plato's Philebus is the ancestor of this approach. Its first premise, defended in Book I of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics, is that the final agential good is the good human life. Though Aristotle introduces this premise while analyzing human activities, it is absent from approaches in the theory of action that self-identify as Aristotelian. This absence, Vogt argues, is a deep and far-reaching mistake, one that can be traced back to Elizabeth Anscombe's influential proposals. And yet, the book is Anscombian in spirit. It engages with ancient texts in order to contribute to philosophy today, and it takes questions about the human mind to be prior to, and relevant to, substantive normative matters. In this spirit, Desiring the Good puts forward a new version of the Guise of the Good, namely that desire to have one's life go well shapes and sustains mid- and small-scale motivations. A theory of good human lives, it is argued, must make room for a plurality of good lives. Along these lines, the book lays out a non-relativist version of Protagoras's Measure Doctrine and defends a new kind of realism about good human lives.

Book Summary:

I wrote this book, The Maturing of the Human Heart and Soul, in the year 2001. It is a wakeup call to humanity. We cannot keep on our current path without very negative results for the human race. The true definition of insanity is to continue to do the same negative things and expect a positive change. We have to choose to change our negative ways. That is when we will see positive change. I then edited this book in 2012 in order to make it more universal in understanding and application. Originally I wrote this book for the American reader only. After visiting Japan in 2012, I felt this message was for the world population, not just one country. It is for you and I to make changes, one person at a time, to affect the world around us.

Book Summary:

In this unique literary memoir, “the greatest Russian poet of our time” pays tribute to the major authors of Russian Symbolist movement (Vladimir Nabokov). In Necropolis, the poet Vladislav Khodasevich turns to prose to memorializes some of the greatest writers of late 19th and early 20th century Russia. In the process, he delivers an insightful and intimate eulogy of the era. Recalling figures including Alexander Blok, Sergey Esenin, Fyodor Sologub, and the socialist realist Maxim Gorky, Khodasevich reveals how their lives and artworks intertwined, including a notorious love triangle among Nina Petrovskaya, Valery Bryusov, and Andrei Bely. Khodasevich testifies to the seductive and often devastating Symbolist ideal of turning one’s life into a work of art. He notes how this ultimately left one man with the task of memorializing his fellow artists after their deaths. Khodasevich’s portraits deal with revolution, disillusionment, emigration, suicide, the vocation of the poet, and the place of the artist in society. Personal and deeply perceptive, Necropolis show the early twentieth-century Russian literary scene in a new light.

The powerful combination of the perennial wisdom of Tao and Osho's insightful and inspirational interpretation makes this a true gem of a book - which will appeal not only to Osho's numerous followers, but also to the increasing number of people who are interested in the wisdom of Tao. Although previously little known, this is one of Osho's classics. He brings his unique perception to the world of Tao, and offers his penetrating and illuminating comments on these original sutras. As always, his inspirational anecdotes and stories illustrate the points he makes - about the spiritual search, love, acceptance and true peace and happiness. With wonderfully irreverent humour, Osho sets out to pierce our disguises, shatter our illusions, cure our addictions and demonstrate the self-limiting and often tragic folly of taking ourselves too seriously.

Book Summary:

Addressing the pervasive longing for healing and belonging, Montana resident and therapist Robyn Bridges invites us to come along on a personal journey into the sentient arms of the natural world. Through a series of short stories of actual encounters with moose and other wildlife in southwest Montana, we adventure with her to find strength and renewal as an antidote to the disappointment and sorrow inherent in life. Gleaned from her years spent alone in lively conversation with the natural world, Bridges offers a feminine and indigenous pathway to becoming more intimate with our inner nature through exploring the natural world. And, like the solitary moose who ambles through streams finding needed nourishment, we discover how to thrive even through the seasons of our own aloneness. Moose Medicine provides a moist template through which the reader’s own instinctive knowing will tread. “At last, a book that explains how to connect with nature through heart and soul. Moose Medicine offers peaceful solutions for all our ills.” –Barbara McGowan, artist and author “For those hungering to find their way through spirit in nature, Robyn Bridges is a compassionate and knowing guide.” –Ginny Watts, M. Ed., psychotherapist, world dance artist, and author “Gentle and powerful, this beautifully written book guides the reader into self-reflection and new possibilities...” –Steve Guettermann, college lecturer and author

Book Summary:

The church was established to serve the world with Christ-like love, not to rule the world. It is called to look like a corporate Jesus, dying on the cross for those who crucified him, not a religious version of Caesar. It is called to manifest the kingdom of the cross in contrast to the kingdom of the sword. Whenever the church has succeeded in gaining what most American evangelicals are now trying to get – political power – it has been disastrous both for the church and the culture. Whenever the church picks up the sword, it lays down the cross. The present activity of the religious right is destroying the heart and soul of the evangelical church and destroying its unique witness to the world. The church is to have a political voice, but we are to have it the way Jesus had it: by manifesting an alternative to the political, “power over,” way of doing life. We are to transform the world by being willing to suffer for others – exercising “power under,” not by getting our way in society – exercising “power over.”
