Book Summary:

"A provocative treatment of political martyrdom in the United States . . . . a well-crafted, thought-provoking book." —The Lincoln Herald "In the U.S., dead politicians and controversial reformers have frequently been called martyrs to a cause. But achieving martyrdom is more elusive than simply being jailed, murdered, or rejected in fighting for what one believes. This is the thrust of Naveh's argument, which traces the martyr motif in American political culture since the 1830s." —Choice "Drawing upon eulogies and obituaries, sermons and biographies, poems and public memorials, Crown of Thorns is most valuable in providing a taxonomy that helps suggest why some public figures sink into oblivion while a very few others belong to the ages." —The Journal of American History "Naveh makes admirable use of a wide range of primary sources, particularly those drawn from popular rather than elite culture . . . . well written . . . Crown of Thorns should be of some interest to all who are interested in the dynamics of cultural inertia and social change in the United States." —History

Book Summary:

In recent decades, there has been considerable interest in writing histories of medicine that capture local, regional, and global dimensions of health and health care in the same frame. Exploring changing patterns of disease and different systems of medicine across continents and countries, A Global History of Medicine provides a rich introduction to this emergent field. The introductory chapter addresses the challenges of writing the history of medicine across space and time and suggests ways in which tracing the entangled histories of the patchworks of practice that have constituted medicine allow us to understand how healing traditions are always plural, permeable, and shaped by power and privilege. Written by scholars from around the world and accompanied by suggestions for further reading, individual chapters explore historical developments in health, medicine, and disease in China, the Islamic World, North and Latin America, Africa, South-east Asia, Western and Eastern Europe, and Australia and New Zealand. The final chapter focuses on smallpox eradication and reflects on the sources and methods necessary to integrate local and global dimensions of medicine more effectively. Collectively, the contributions to A Global History of Medicine will not only be invaluable to undergraduate and postgraduate students seeking to expand their knowledge of health and medicine across time, but will also provide a constructive theoretical and empirical platform for future scholarship.

Book Summary:

Gershom Scholem stands out among modern thinkers for the richness and power of his historical imagination. A work widely esteemed as his magnum opus, Sabbatai Ṣevi offers a vividly detailed account of the only messianic movement ever to engulf the entire Jewish world. Sabbatai Ṣevi was an obscure kabbalist rabbi of seventeenth-century Turkey who aroused a fervent following that spread over the Jewish world after he declared himself to be the Messiah. The movement suffered a severe blow when Ṣevi was forced to convert to Islam, but a clandestine sect survived. A monumental and revisionary work of Jewish historiography, Sabbatai Ṣevi details Ṣevi's rise to prominence and stands out for its combination of philological and empirical authority and passion. This edition contains a new introduction by Yaacob Dweck that explains the scholarly importance of Scholem's work to a new generation of readers.

These details about the first 2,000 years of human history are all to be found in this exciting volume. We now know that Adam and Eve had two generations of children before Cain and Abel were born. The exact year of the Great Flood can now be calculated. Details about the golden age of Enoch are now available so that we can understand how the law of consecration works and how it eliminates poverty and crime. One of the most magnificent stories in this book is the life of Abraham. He received revelations about astronomy and mathematics which he later taught the Egyptians. He was a remarkable example of faith and obedience, even in offering his own son as a sacrifice to the God he loved. All of these tremendously important new revelations belong to the sweeping panorama of the first 2,000 years of human history. This book is designed to make the study of the Old Testament an inspirational pleasure. Although presented for easy reading, the text is carefully documented so that every important point can be correlated with appropriate passages in the scriptures. Book Summary:

Religions in today’s culture seem to be multiplying. Have you ever wondered why certain religions believe and practice what they do? Or how they view the Bible? This volume delves into these and other engaging questions, such as: How can a Christian witness to people in these religions? Do these other religions believe in creation and a Creator? How do we deal with these religions from a biblical authority perspective? Many religions and cults discussed in this first volume openly affirm that the Bible is true, but then something gets in their way. And there is a common factor every time—man’s fallible opinions. In one way or another the Bible gets demoted, reinterpreted, or completely ignored. Man’s ideas are used to throw the Bible’s clear teaching out the window while false teachings are promoted. This book is a must for laymen, church leaders, teachers, and students to understand the trends in our culture and around the world where certain religions dominate, helping you discern truth and guard your faith. When you understand a religion’s origins and teachings, you are in a better position to know how to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ as you take the good news to those in false religions.

Book Summary:

Foreword Heartlight This book will change your relationship with reality. K. Michael Curcuru bestows enlightenment in a book. What you hold in your hands doesnt just have words about light. It conveys light. This book is a touchstone. Get into it. Let it wash over you. Read aloud the exquisite passages, and relish the sparkling energy that enfolds you. This is a new literary genre: stream-of-light-consciousness writing. When I began reading Heartlight, my recovering English teacher started sputtering, Oh dear, thats what hes using as a verb? Then the beauty and flow of the book moved me into a different way of being with it. Michael really does see the world as hes written it here. He embodies radiant light. And this book imparts transformation just as Michael doesenergetically speaking because Michael is that light. He has discovered a way of gifting an enlightened level of being to you by experiencing his book. Heartlight is an energetic field. Like a magnetic field realigns poles of iron filings, you will find yourself feeling lighter, expanded, and more open-hearted and self-loving when you spend time in this book. You will absorb this book at a subatomic level. Avoid seeking the sentence structure Newtonian method. Let your right brain fall in love with this book. Use the creative, fluid, random part of you that senses wholeness rather than constructs it. As you drop into this book, you may find yourself swept away, poised on the crest of a word wave. Awash in alluring alliteration, you ask, From whence did I come? You can find your way home, Dorothy, by remembering. Heartlight is about how to be the light in the Illusion; it is how to find the light, trust the light, and be cradled by the light. As Michael would say, In-Joy! This book opens up a new field of research. The many subjects addressed include the roots of the Eucharist in various temple rituals and offerings other than Passover, the meaning of the holy of holies and the Christian sanctuary, the cosmology of temple and church, the significance of the Veil of the Temple for understanding priesthood and Incarnation, the Holy Wisdom and the Mother of God, angels and priesthood, the concept of unity, the high priestly tradition in the early church and evidence that Christianity was a conscious continuation of the temple. All scholars and students whose interest encompasses the origins of Christian (and Orthodox) liturgy, the Old Testament, early Christianity, Jewish Christian relations, Platonism and the origins of Islam will find this book a hugely rewarding source of information and new ideas.

Book Summary:

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is an influential church in the United States and beyond. Yet, it remains a mysterious entity to those who are not members. Now we find the church contains mysteries unknown to even those who call it their spiritual home. In Will the Real Mormons Stand Up and Sound the Alarm? author Vern Porter shares his discovery of the potentially seamier side of the church. After nearly twenty years in the church, Porter was doing part-time missionary work when he ran across members obsessed with polygamy and racism. When he confronted them, the treatment he received led him to reexamine anti-Mormon accusations he had experienced from Baptists. For several years, he studied the Scriptures and history of the church, including the Journal of Discourses, a twenty-six-volume record of conference talks from the early 1850s to the mid-1880s. As he researched the church, it became obvious to him that its scholars and leaders had covered up details of Mormon doctrine and history from the church’s early days in Utah. Although he left the church for twenty-five years, he returned after experiencing some hard-to-forget dreams. Though most of his friends received him with open arms, some tried to drive him away. In Will the Real Mormons Stand Up and Sound the Alarm? Porter pulls back the curtain and shares some of his real concerns about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, especially concerning more radical members and beliefs.

Book Summary:

First published in 1882, The Perfect Way or The Finding of Christ is Anna Kingsford's attempt to bring together Christianity and the Theosophical tradition, which supposes a system of fundamental truths from which all religions are born and seeks to identify that wisdom so that humans may move further along their path to perfection. This perfection, according to Kingsford, is exemplified by Christ, which she sees as a category of person and not a particular historical person. In this construction, anyone is capable of a becoming a Christ and joining with the Divine. Students of religion and spiritual seekers will find this book an interesting read from a once popular religious and philosophical movement. English physician ANNA BONUS KINGSFORD (1846-1888) was also one of the first women in England to be granted a medical degree and served as onetime president of the Theosophical Society. She is also the author of Clothing with the Sun (1889). English writer EDWARD MAITLAND (1824-1897) assisted Anna Kingsford in writing several books and then opened the Esoteric Christian Union in 1891.

Book Summary:

William Booth - pawnbroker's assistant, firebrand preacher, advocate of women's rights, friend of the poor, confidant of statesmen, politicians and royalty, father of eight children, champion of the marginalised, and founder and first General of The Salvation Army. General Booth's courage, oratory and passion changed Victorian Britain. He resolutely ignored his critics - including those who decried him as the Anti-Christ - and reached out to those who considered themselves well outside the concern of Almighty God. Prayer and practicality were his hallmarks: he ridiculed the idea of preaching to a beggar while that beggar was cold and hungry. William Booth worked tirelessly, campaigning, researching, negotiating, adapting music-hall songs - and writing. This book introduces us to his heart and convictions. Here we find the urgency, thought and humanity which drove him on.

Book Summary:

The theological and philosophical works of C. S. Lewis were grounded in the argument from reason. As such reason is a form of revelation that predates nature and relates to the divine: the Word of God, Christ the Logos. These essays provide some understanding of the essentials to Lewis's philosophical theology, that is, the essentia, "in the highest degree." Lewis's corpus can seem disparate, but here we find unity in his aims, objectives, and methodology, a consistency that demonstrates the deep roots of his philosophical theology in Scripture, in Greek philosophy, patristic and medieval theology, and in some of the Reformers, all framed by a reasoned discipline from a perceptive and critical mind: method and form; content and reason--for the glory of God. Here is the essentia of Lewis's thinking. From an analysis of reason, through a theoretically unified proposition for atonement, to the evidence of Christ as the light of the world across human endeavors and religions, to a doctrine of election, to an understanding of Scripture, to "the Philosophy of the Incarnation" (as Lewis termed it,) through fundamental arguments with various modern/liberal theologians, we find evidence for the actuality of the incarnation: the divinity of Christ.

Genesis to Numbers. This volume is the first of three on the Old Testament. It begins with a discussion of the importance of studying the Old Testament, and the role of Jesus Christ in the Plan of Salvation and His selection as our Savior in the premortal council in heaven. We read concerning the process of creation, the placing of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, and their fall into mortality. We learn briefly about Cain and Abel, followed by brief discussions of all the patriarchs from Adam to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We follow the story of Joseph in Egypt followed by the migration of Jacob's family to that land for survival. We read of the rise of Moses, the Exodus, and the events at Mt. Sinai. Then we study the rebellion of the children of Israel and their wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. The cover features a beautiful image of Abraham's Journey from Ur to Canaan, painted by Jozsef Molnar in 1880.
