Book Summary:

An heiress breaks free of social conventions and attempts to solve the mystery of her father’s disappearance in 1842 Philadelphia in Cordelia Frances Biddle’s first Martha Beale mystery When her father fails to appear for lunch at their country estate, Martha Beale knows something is wrong. The family’s faithful dogs discover Lemuel Beale’s hunting rifle by the river, but there is no sign of the millionaire financier. Refusing to believe he is dead, his daughter—and sole heir—begins a discreet investigation with the help of the mayor’s aide, Thomas Kelman. But Philadelphia in 1842 is a dangerous place for a female, especially a twenty-six-year-old single woman. Martha’s quest for answers takes her from the pinnacle of high society, which is abuzz about a visiting European conjurer who communicates with the dead, to the city’s tragic slums where a brutal killer is targeting young prostitutes—and through it all Martha will confront the most ruthless aspects of human nature. In a story deeply rooted in time and place and brimming with atmosphere and suspense, Cordelia Frances Biddle conjures a mesmerizing world of intrigue and hidden desires.

Book Summary:

London Labour and the London Poor originated in a series of newspaper articles written by the great journalist Henry Mayhew between 1849 and 1850. A dozen years later, it had grown into the fullest picture we have of labouring people in the world's greatest city in the nineteenth century: a four volume account of the hopes, customs, grievances and habits of the working-classes that allows them to tell their own stories. Combining practicality with compassion, Mayhew worked unencumbered by political theory and strove solely to report on the lives of the London poor, their occupations and trades. This selection shows how well he succeeded. From costermongers to ex-convicts, from chimney-sweeps to vagrants, the underprivileged of London are uniquely brought to life - their plight expressed through a startling blend of first person accounts, Mayhew's perceptions, and sharp statistics.

African American Life in the Georgia Lowcountry

Book Summary:

The lush landscape and subtropical climate of the Georgia coast only enhance the air of mystery enveloping some of its inhabitants--people who owe, in some ways, as much to Africa as to America. As the ten previously unpublished essays in this volume examine various aspects of Georgia lowcountry life, they often engage a central dilemma: the region's physical and cultural remoteness helps to preserve the venerable ways of its black inhabitants, but it can also marginalize the vital place of lowcountry blacks in the Atlantic World. The essays, which range in coverage from the founding of the Georgia colony in the early 1700s through the present era, explore a range of topics, all within the larger context of the Atlantic world. Included are essays on the double-edged freedom that the American Revolution made possible to black women, the lowcountry as site of the largest gathering of African Muslims in early North America, and the coexisting worlds of Christianity and conjuring in coastal Georgia and the links (with variations) to African practices. A number of fascinating, memorable characters emerge, among them the defiant Mustapha Shaw, who felt entitled to land on Ossabaw Island and resisted its seizure by whites only to become embroiled in struggles with other blacks; Betty, the slave woman who, in the spirit of the American Revolution, presented a "list of grievances" to her master; and S'Quash, the Arabic-speaking Muslim who arrived on one of the last legal transatlantic slavers and became a head man on a North Carolina plantation. Published in association with the Georgia Humanities Council.

Book Summary:

In his very first attempt at playwriting, British author G.K. Chesterton knocked it out of the proverbial ballpark with Magic, a drawing-room comedy in which a diverse group of friends and family members gather together to enjoy the entertainment provided by an amateur magician. What ensues is a philosophical free-for-all during which virtually every "ism" under the sun is mercilessly skewered.

Book Summary:

Winner of the Bancroft Prize. “[A] beautifully conceived and penetrating book . . . one of the finest studies of American slavery ever written.”—The New Republic Published some thirty years ago, Robert Manson Myers’s Children of Pride: The True Story of Georgia and the Civil War won the National Book Award in history and went on to become a classic reference on America’s slaveholding South. That book presented the letters of the prominent Presbyterian minister and plantation patriarch Charles Colcock Jones (1804–1863), whose family owned more than one hundred slaves. While extensive, these letters can provide only one part of the story of the Jones family plantations in coastal Georgia. In this remarkable new book, the religious historian Erskine Clarke completes the story, offering a narrative history of four generations of the plantations’ inhabitants, white and black. Encompassing the years 1805 to 1869, Dwelling Place: A Plantation Epic describes the simultaneous but vastly different experiences of slave and slave owner. This “upstairsdownstairs” history reveals in detail how the benevolent impulses of Jones and his family became ideological supports for deep oppression, and how the slave Lizzy Jones and members of her family struggled against that oppression. Through letters, plantation and church records, court documents, slave narratives, archaeological findings, and the memory of the African American community, Clarke brings to light the long-suppressed history of the slaves of the Jones plantations—a history inseparably bound to that of their white owners. “Clarke’s magisterial, multiperspective study of the antebellum South describes two family groups . . . a ‘total’ history of interconnected people divided by race, legal status, and gender.”—Choice

He wrote on philosophy, ontology, poetry, plays, journalism, public lectures and debates, literary and art criticism, biography, Christian apologetics, and fiction, including fantasy and detective fiction. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox". Whenever possible, Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, and allegories—first carefully turning them inside out. Chesterton is well known for his reasoned apologetics and even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the universal appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both progressivism and conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify such a position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius". He studied at the Slade School of Art, and upon graduating began to work as a freelance journalist. Over the course of his life, his literary output was incredibly diverse and highly prolific, ranging from philosophy and ontology to art criticism and detective fiction. However, he is probably best-remembered for his Christian apologetics, most notably in Orthodoxy (1908) and The Everlasting Man (1925). Book Summary:

Example in this ebook "I had a friend who loved me;” but he has gone, and the “great gulf” is between us. After his death I received a packet of manuscript with these few words:— “What I have written may appeal to you because of our friendship, and because, when you come to read them, you will seek to grasp, in these apparent confidences, an inner meaning that to the end will elude you. If you think others, not the many but the few, might find here any answer to their unuttered questionings, any fellowship of sympathy in those experiences which are the milestones of our lives, then use the letters as you will, but without my name. I shall have gone, and the knowledge of my name would make no one either wiser or happier.” In the packet I found these letters. I cannot tell whether there is any special order in which they should be read—there was nothing to guide me on that point. I do not know whether they are to real or imaginary people, whether they were ever sent or only written as an amusement, a relief to feeling, or with a purpose—the one to which they are now put, for instance. One thing is certain, namely, that, however taken, they are not all indited to the same person; of that there seems to be convincing internal evidence. The writer was, by trade, a diplomatist; by inclination, a sportsman with literary and artistic tastes; by force of circumstances he was a student of many characters, and in some sense a cynic. He was also a traveller—not a great traveller, but he knew a good deal of Europe, a little of America, much of India and the further East. He spent some time in this neighbourhood, and was much interested in the country and its people. There is an Eastern atmosphere about many of the letters, and he made no secret of the fact that he was fascinated by the glamour of the lands of sunshine. He died very suddenly by misadventure, and, even to me, his packet of letters came rather as a revelation. Before determining to publish the letters, I showed them to a friend on whose opinion I knew the writer had set store. He said, “The critic will declare there is too much scenery, too much sentiment. Very likely he will be right for those whose lives are passed in the streets of London, and the letters will not interest so many readers as would stories of blood and murder. Yet leave them. Love is in the atmosphere day and night, and the scenery is in true proportion to our lives here, where, after all, sunsets are commoner than murders.” Therefore I have left them as they came to me, only using my discretion to omit some of the letters altogether. Book Summary:

Book 8 of Shifters Forever Worlds Box Set Grizzly bear shifters, dragon shifters, sorceresses, elementals, and all types of other paranormal beings and their mates steam up the pages as the Bear Canyon Valley clan sorts through trespassers with hidden agendas, hidden military compounds, top secret experiments, and courageous, incredible women who are ready to take a chance on their happily forever after. The romances in this collection will capture your heart and leave your head spinning! Confusion Once, before Griz was known as Griz, he was Larsen del Cruz. This was before he had a scar that split his face, eyebrow to jaw. When he was one of the Draecenguard. He was also a man who fell in love. Forbidden love. That love gave him a scar and nearly cost him his life. It definitely cost him more than that. The full effects of that loss lasted years. It’s still lasting. Allegra Draecen has known only one way of life. Leaving that life behind was not an easy decision. Nor was it one she came to quickly. She can only hope her choice does not endanger those she loves or those she left behind. Decision A mission at the top secret Razorpeak Mountain Complex has completely flipped Ciara’s life upside down. Daughter of an intuitive and a bear shifter descendant, Ciara is an intuitive herself. And she has a problem she can’t explain and definitely can’t solve. Ciara hadn’t counted on her cousin Griz, driven by concern, stopping at nothing to help out his little cousin. Krisztián’s been asked to assist Griz’s cousin with a problem. What problem? Griz doesn’t even know. So, with a GPS set for her home, Krisztián heads out. Possession Shifter Slate Youngblood’s got one mission. Stay alive and avoid the feds. Svetlana’s a seer with a haunted past. A skilljacker on the lam runs into a beautiful, haunted seer. On any other day, this could have been a match made in heaven, but not when he steals her skills. And definitely not when she takes his bear. Illusion Meri’s a forensic pathologist with a spectacular arrangement with Notre Dame University—practically unlimited access to funds and a paid position to perform her dream research. Deathbending bear shifter Dunnigan Youngblood’s got a hell of a problem. He’s got to sneak out of a morgue before someone decides to cut into him. Too late. Passion Matteo Berberis, dragon shifter, has not been adjusting very well to life away from the Pontic Mountains. Sure, he lives in Bear Canyon Valley, and he’s got freedoms he never had before, but his dragon is angry. He misses their home country. What’s a dragon shifter to do when shifting into his dragon—and running off is not an option. Not in a world where dragons are hunted. When did the apex predator of all shifter types become the hunted? He gives his dragon his head and they roam, flying over Bear Canyon Valley regularly. This day was anything but regular though. He’s come across a beautiful stranger with a problem. He’d have thought he could provide help until he had a problem of his own. Stuck mid-shift, he finds himself at her mercy and at the mercy of those hunting her. Jolie Anker’s harboring a secret that could bring doom to the Bear Canyon Valley clan. Impression Salvatore Draecen has received word about a sorceress being held captive in Crossroads. A sorceress, that word has it, looks way too much like the love of his life. Selene Campione has been a prisoner for more years than she can count. Truly. More years than she can remember. Devoid of her powers and memories, she’s been in a muddled state of mind, the victim of experimentation at the hands of the group at Crossroads. Now, as fate would have it, her powers are returning. And so are the painful memories. The last time she saw Salvatore, he was on another continent, safe and sound.

Book Summary:

Twenty-five years after its original publication, Slave Religion remains a classic in the study of African American history and religion. In a new chapter in this anniversary edition, author Albert J. Raboteau reflects upon the origins of the book, the reactions to it over the past twenty-five years, and how he would write it differently today. Using a variety of first and second-hand sources-- some objective, some personal, all riveting-- Raboteau analyzes the transformation of the African religions into evangelical Christianity. He presents the narratives of the slaves themselves, as well as missionary reports, travel accounts, folklore, black autobiographies, and the journals of white observers to describe the day-to-day religious life in the slave communities. Slave Religion is a must-read for anyone wanting a full picture of this "invisible institution."

Book Summary:

Popular American essayist, novelist, and journalist CHARLES DUDLEY WARNER (1829-1900) was renowned for the warmth and intimacy of his writing, which encompassed travelogue, biography and autobiography, fiction, and more, and influenced entire generations of his fellow writers. Here, the prolific writer turned editor for his final grand work, a splendid survey of global literature, classic and modern, and it's not too much to suggest that if his friend and colleague Mark Twain-who stole Warner's quip about how "everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it"-had assembled this set, it would still be hailed today as one of the great achievements of the book world. Highlights from Volume 21 include: . the writings of Thomas Jefferson, including the Declaration of Independence . the letters of Samuel Johnson . the writings of Ben Jonson . selections from the historical writings of Josephus . selections from Juvenal . excerpts from the Kabbalah . the philosophy of Immanuel Kant . the poems of John Keats . the religious devotions of Thomas Kempis . and much, much more.
